Welcome to the Haveman Chronicle. For this first week on the job I’d like you to create a discussion post where you talk about how the mass media has affected your thoughts and/or actions in the past. For example, it used to be that every time I watched Extreme Makeover: Home Edition I would be very dissatisfied with my house afterward. Talk about a time when you’ve somehow felt changed, for better or worse, by an experience with the mass media. This week create your own discussion post. For future discussions, just respond to the discussion post I’ve created. Don’t forget to select “Conference Room” from the list of categories on the right so your posts end up in the right place.
My mom is a fan of the show Hoarders: Buried Alive, this show makes me feel so much better about how my room at home and the one here, at the dorms as well, look.
Watching that show, quite honestly, makes me sick. However, looking at how these people live makes me think that maybe a little clutter isn’t really that bad, at least until it gets to be more than a little clutter, and that I am not that much of a messy person, well compared to these people.
Hoarders is a great show to watch. It gets a little redundant (how many packed-to-the-brim homes can you watch?) but it definitely inspires me to get rid of whatever I don’t need. That’s counter to what most of the mass media is telling us–buy buy buy! If you think about it, the commercials are trying to convince you to get more stuff and the program shows you what will happen if you do…
To add on to both Leia and your posts, my boyfriend and I just got cable after exclusively watching netflix for about 2 years… And boy, it’s rough! The other day we decided to watch Celebrity Wife Swap, because how bad could it be? I’ll give you a hint, it’s pretty damn awful.
We basically watched Coolio treat his new wife like total garbage, because he’s Coolio I suppose, and his wife went over to this unknown (to me) country singer’s house where she was super helpful and nice, and he returned the favor.
Oh well, TV shows? I miss Netflix. Let’s watch The Wire.
In general, cable television destroys my faith in humanity. The Wire is awesome, though.
I think one thing within media that affects me is instagram and seeing all the diffrent post from people all over the world. I see them and I wonder if the life I am living is as adventures as them or I see the people they meet and I wonder how I can be meeting people like that and I caught myself living in there lives instead of mine. It sounds silly but it blows me away how caught up in media we all get. I work with high school students and instagram and twitter controls there life. I have to contastly remind myself and them that the steps we take and the moments we breathe that is real life not the photos we see or the places we want to be. This can also be transfered to TV and movies watching the shows and wishing I was there and part of that life. Wishing that we meet that perfect person or get that perfect vacation. I don’t have cable or Netflix so social media is the biggest affect in my life.
It’s such a strange thought, isn’t it? I always say to myself, “everyone is their own protagonist”. Every single person you ever see or have ever seen has their own thoughts, dreams, ambitions goals, memories, everything! It’s mind blowing.
I also have to remember that the media only likes negative things as well. For every negative thing, I’m sure a dozen other positive things happened that the media doesn’t report because people wouldn’t eat it up as well (besides the occasional cute animal story, those are awesome.)
For as much flak as they get, cute animal stories are a serious spot of sunshine it what can sometimes seem like a crazy, heartless world.
I can’t believe I just wrote that…
Yeah, I think you really have to think about what is lasting and worthwhile in life. Is the effort you put into social media paying some sort of dividends? I’d be interested to know. I personally use social media as a tool to get the word out about stuff I’m doing and very little for general socializing. I’m open to the idea that social media can be worth putting a lot of effort into, but I’m certainly not convinced of it, unless you’re using it for business or something like that.
It seems that every year, a new, faster version of media is available. Whether it be political videos on YouTube, instant updates on the local news channel, or ephemeral, seven-second photos on Snapchat, information is being thrown at us from every direction and at an ever-increasing frequency. Although this information is easily accessible and spontaneous, I have seen a very common repercussion — impatience. We live in a world of short-lived sound bytes where we receive information that is both instant and to the point. No more waiting around or even having to read an entire article, just search key words. This has produced in us a feeling of entitlement of sorts, where, if we cannot obtain the information within a matter of a few minutes, it is not worth our time. Ever have to wait for your online video to buffer? It only takes five, maybe fifteen seconds at the most, yet we usually find ourselves clicking the refresh button before then. Every little “entitlement” we feel should be ours in media works itself into our everyday lives as well. Transactions, cell service, and microwavable foods are just a few examples. I do, however, believe the utility gained from having instant informational access outweighs this, but it is a common problem I have noticed.
Impatience is a big issue. I think it plays a big part in the credit card debt problems we face in this country. We don’t want to wait until we’ve saved up the money to buy something and we don’t want to wait until we’ve moved up the economic ladder before we start living like we’re there. Credit cards tap into our impatience and charge us 18% interest on it.
Mass media has affected me in a lot of different ways. Take for example when i’m watching a news channel like Fox or CNN, when i see all the things that are happening in the world. Like all the fighting and violence and just mass killings ranging from foreign to domestic, it really makes me feel angry and sad at the same time. The media has a way of controlling you and your emotions and it almost makes us accustomed to what he hear like it’s programming us to watch this section but nothing else and to hear certain parts while disregarding other parts of the cast. The same goes for online and the many sites that are available to us, though its true with all of this we can learn things quickly like in seconds, but at what cost? To be honest the media has made it to where i personally have come to terms what the world is, and that’s it’s full of lies, pain, depression, and a place where nobody seems to care to think anymore. It really makes you thankful for the life you have!
There’s a theory called the “Mean World Syndrome” that says the more TV you watch, the more dangerous you think the world is. I think it applies to all sorts of media, though, not just TV. Especially the News. I hate to say it, but I don’t recommend people watch the news on TV because I think it will distort your understanding of how dangerous the world really is. There’s a saying in journalism, “If it bleeds, it leads.” Violence sells papers and brings in viewers, and that’s what the news media needs to survive, so they’re going to do it until it stops working.
For the final a part of your preparation, you need to have a contingency plan.
I seriously tested out all of the quit smoking
techniques. Children always pay serious awareness
of the words of these parents.
There have been precious few cars that can accelerate
with the Spyder California-quarter miles are in the sub-15 second range-but even few
could take action by using these elegant, dress ball style.
At least whenever we wear ours it won’t, and nor would driving the 2011 Buick Regal CXL.
Obviously, regardless of what the mileage, they’re
miles inside a Buick LaCrosse and that’s definitely a very important thing.
Say one of your Twitter pals asks an issue on a topic you are knowledgeable in, start and
share your answers. The outcome of those higher rankings is the fact that
a site gets more hits.
